Joi'a Austin
Founder/Director
Joi’a Austin is the Founder and Program Director of Full STEAM Ahead, a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding access to high-quality literacy and STEM experiences for children and youth in underserved communities.
With a deep belief that education should be engaging, hands-on, and equitable, Joi’a created Full STEAM Ahead to address the disparities she witnessed in educational access based on socioeconomic status, location, and resources. She believes every child—regardless of background—deserves meaningful learning experiences that spark curiosity, build confidence, and nurture the whole child.
Joi’a began her work by providing STEM instruction at various centers and schools, traveling to teach hands-on classes and educational workshops. While this work allowed her to reach many students, she felt called to serve children who would benefit most but often lacked access due to cost. This passion led her to transition her work into the nonprofit space, offering free literacy and STEM programming through community partnerships, including local libraries.
Under Joi’a’s leadership, Full STEAM Ahead has grown into a trusted community program offering monthly Literacy & STEM Saturdays, teen leadership and service opportunities, enrichment labs, and culturally relevant events that connect learning to real-world applications. Although operating without grant funding for several years, Joi’a has remained committed to ensuring families can participate regardless of financial barriers.
Her approach centers on closing educational gaps, making learning joyful, and empowering students through literacy, STEM, mentorship, and representation. Joi’a’s work is driven not by recognition or reward, but by a genuine passion for shaping young minds and creating opportunities that lead to long-term academic and personal growth.
